HERS Rater
Overview
If you're looking for an energy auditor to evaluate your house's energy efficiency, your best bet is to look for one that has a HERS Certification. Energy audits performed by Certified HERS Raters are often required to qualify for energy efficient mortgages and other programs.
Details
One of the most widespread certifications for energy auditors is RESNET's Certified HERS Rater program. Energy auditors must complete training and a certification exam given by RESNET's accreditation providers. Certified HERS Raters are trained on the best practices in evaluating the efficiency of homes — including air leakage, energy loss through the house's walls, roof and floor, and all the heating and cooling systems in the house.
As a homeowner, you should make sure that you're working with a Certified HERS Rater or BPI Building Analyst when getting your home audited to determine your home's efficiency.
