The New Jersey Office of Clean Energy (OCE) offers rebates to state residents who purchase certain energy efficient home appliances. In order to be eligible for a rebate, consumers must be customers of an electric utility that collects the Societal Benefits Charge on customer bills. The electric utilities that do this are Atlantic City Electric; Jersey Central Power & Light; PSE&G Electric; and Rockland Electric Company. In addition, customers of the gas utilities New Jersey Natural Gas, Elizabethtown Gas, PSE&G Gas, and South Jersey Gas are eligible for clothes washer rebates even if they do not receive electric service from one of the electric utilities listed above. The rebates offered vary by appliance type. As of January 4, 2012 only one appliance rebate was indicated as being active on the program website. Current rebate amounts are as follows:

  • Clothes washers: $50 (expires December 31, 2012)
The program website has a search engine where consumers can look up local retailers offering discounts on compact fluorescent lighting products. The OCE also offers a $50 rebate for refrigerator/freezer recycling. Rebates are not available for the purchase of new refrigerators or freezers.

As a general rule, all appliances must be Energy Star rated; however, additional requirements may apply to different types of appliances. Rebate requests must generally be made no later than one month after the purchase of a qualifying appliance and be accompanied by proof of purchase and product information. Rebates may be limited to one per customer for some equipment types although this is not always the case. For further information on the program please consult the program website.
