Chicopee Electric Light offered rebates to residential customers who install solar photovoltaic systems on their homes. Customer rebates are $2.50 per watt for a maximum of $5,000 per installation.
Customers are required to have an automatic disconnect switch that disconnects the system from the grid in the event of a power failure. A renewable energy credit (REC) is created for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity produced and is sold separate from the electricity. CEL has the option of buying RECs from the customer at a rate of $0.03 per kWh.
