SMUD offers an incentive of $1.10 per watt (W) AC to residential customers who install grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. Customers do not have to contract directly with SMUD-approved contractors for the purchase and installation of the system, however this is recommended. All systems must be permitted and installed by B, C-10, or C-46 contractors. The incentive will be adjusted based on expected system performance, which is affected by factors such as orientation, tilt and shading. SMUD also offers a five-year PBI option that currently pays $0.17/kWh for the system generation. Payments are made quarterly.
The incentive can be paid directly to the customer or the installer. Both traditional PV modules and building-integrated PV "roof shingles" are eligible under the program.
