Providing diagnostic and non-diagnostic energy audits to Missouri home owners.
A diagnostic energy audit is also referred to among professional auditors as a "Level 2" or a "Level 3" energy audit. A useful and effective diagnostic energy audit, as those that are performed by me, will include the following important items, as a minimum, conducted in full compliance with the standards and protocol prescribed by the Building Performance Institute (BPI):
1. Identification of the type, size, condition and rate of energy consumption for each major energy-using device.
2. Recommendations for appropriate energy conservation, operation and maintenance procedures.
3. A measurement of the amount of air leakage calculated through the administration of a blower door test.
4. Cost projections for labor and materials for energy efficiency improvements.
5. Projected savings expected from energy efficiency improvements.
6. Reporting of current and potential health and safety problems and how they may be affected by the proposed changes.
7. A written record of the audit with a scope of work written out for the contractor that you decide to hire to do work that you do not plan to do yourself.
8. When arranged at the time of the audit, I can return to perform a follow-up audit to judge the effectiveness of the contractor's work and to ensure that the appropriate steps were taken to reduce energy use. This will include a visual inspection of added or new insulation and another blower door test to measure the improvement to the air leakage noted in the first audit.
The non-diagnostic energy audit is also referred to as a "Level 1" energy audit and the information is gathered in a non-invasive manner and without the use of special testing instruments.
A non-diagnostic energy audit used for HES (Home Energy Score) rating or other informational purposes will include the following important items, as a minimum, conducted in full compliance with the standards and protocol prescribed by the Building Performance Institute (BPI):
1. Identification of the type, size, condition and rate of energy consumption for each major energy-using device.
2. Recommendations for appropriate energy conservation, operation and maintenance procedures.
3. Reporting of current and potential health and safety problems and how they may be affected by the proposed changes.
4. A written record of the audit to include a Department of Energy certificate with the Home Energy Score, when applicable.
The non-diagnostic energy audit (and the Home Energy Score (HES), when applicable) can be purchased separately or will be included, with no additional charge, as part of a diagnositic energy audit.
( Note: The non-diagnostic energy audit does not include a blower door test, it does not address or make specific recommendations pertaining to particular mechanical or structural issues and does not project any costs or results stemming from improvements.)
