As of Jan. 1 2011, the energy efficiency federal tax credit is equal to 10 percent of the cost of energy efficiency upgrades. The credit excludes labor costs and is capped at $200 for ENERGY STAR windows. When determining which tax year to file your credit in, the IRS uses when the products were "placed in service". In other words, when the windows were installed determines the tax year rather than the date of purchase.
We purchased ENERGY STAR windows in 2010 but they will not be installed until 2011. Can we still qualify for the 2010 federal tax credit of 30 percent?
