I want to replace, rather than repair, my 18 year old heat pump. Can I get a rebate or credit from Progress Energy and would a 13 or 14 SEER heat pump help?

You should be sure that you replace both pieces (outside and inside units) and sell what you already have for the copper value or as a used system (as long as it works). In this economy, there is a market for used systems!

Two examples of cost:

This first one is an example of the costs for replacement with a central HVAC heat pump system. Although there are systems with electric heat that are much cheaper, I find that heat pumps are best for most of America's climates. A new system from us can start as low as $1,200 and can go to $3,000 for the higher efficiency and larger systems (4.0 and 5.0 ton system). The prices include the equipment and the installation. However, you may need to pay a nominal amount (approx. $200) for new replacement items such as new copper lines from the outside to the inside units or a new thermostat.

As another example, we can offer a new and complete 3.0 ton heat pump system, with a ten year guarantee, with all the bells and whistles for around $1,900 or a 2.0 ton for less than $1,600. The installation can vary from $500 to $700 depending on where you live and the installers in your area. We could possibly do it if we have a presence in your area.

Now, for rebates:

There are actually cash rebates from Progress. The rebate from Progress can be as much as $500 depending on your type of account, home size and what system you buy. Also, the Federal tax credit is now at $300 for a 15 SEER system.

We'd be glad to help. I suggest go with the 15 SEER, if you want the rebates, which is what I priced above. The 14 SEER is hardly made anymore, and while the 13 SEER systems are quite nice and can save lots of money initially, the rebate would be less, if any. Therefore, we suggest either a 13 or 15 SEER. Save now or save later. Remember, the Federal program is for 15 SEER or greater. We suggest the Payne/Bryant/Carrier labels with the Payne System being our best sellers.
