If your storm windows are energy efficient with a U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.30 or less, then yes, you qualify! The Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credit offered by the U.S. government will is equal to 30 percent of the cost of your storm windows, not to exceed $1,500. Find out how to claim this credit on your 2010 tax returns.

If your storm windows don’t use up all of the $1,500 you’re entitled to, you can make other improvements, like installing insulation or replacing outdated HVAC equipment. Learn more about different energy efficiency projects on our Topics + Community page.

Also, check with your local utility companies, they may offer additional energy efficiency rebates that you can take advantage to minimize your upfront costs.
