Step-by-step instructions on how to apply can be found on EnergySavvy.com. The maximum rebate for energy-efficient windows is $450 at $30 per window. To qualify, your windows will need to have and SHGC and a U factor of 0.4 or lower.
However, you may want to buy windows with an SHGC and U factor of 0.3 or less because not only will it save you more money on your utility bills, but it will also qualify you for the federal Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credit. The federal tax credit is equal to 30 percent of the cost of the windows for up to $1,500.
One thing to keep in mind when upgrading windows is that it may not be the most cost-effective upgrade you can make because although you may be able to save a few hundred dollars per year by replacing all of your single-pane windows, the cost to replace them will be very high. Therefore, it probably won’t be cost-effective in the short term.
If you’d like to get an idea of what upgrades would be most beneficial in your home, take a few minutes to answer some questions about your home on our online energy audit.
