Older refrigerators and freezers that many people have in their garages and basements can be one of the main sources of electrical usage in the house. If you think about it, when you last bought a new refrigerator, what did you do with the old one? You probably put it out in the garage to store beer and frozen food that doesn't fit in your new refrigerator.
And your new refrigerator is surely more energy efficient than your old one. But wait... By keeping your older one around, you're now consuming far more energy than you did before because you've still got your old refrigerator running, and now you've got a 2nd one running as well.
So, the easy answer to whether to get rid of a 2nd refrigerator to save money is.... yes. If you can manage to fit your food in one.
As far as how much it's costing to run your refrigerator or freezer, here's a handy calculator. It's a little low-tech, but it should give you a solid analysis on how much it's costing you to run your old freezer and whether it's worth it to replace it with a newer one.
