We had a geothermal heat pump HVAC system, with a hot water "pre-heating" option, installed during the 2009 tax year. Our home is not historical and not in a historical area. What rebates, tax credits, incentives, etc. are available to us, and what deadlines are in place for application?

There are a couple of incentives that you can take advantage of for your geothermal heat pump. First, you can apply for Maryland’s Geothermal Heat Pump Grant and receive up to $3,000 to help cover the system’s cost. Visit EnergySavvy’s geothermal grant incentive page to learn how to apply.

Second, you may be eligible for a federal tax credit equal to 30 percent of your system’s cost. To be eligible, you must meet the ENERGY STAR COP and EER specifications, which are 14.1 or greater for EER and 3.3 or greater for COP for closed loop systems. For more information on how to apply, visit EnergySavvy’s Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit incentive page.

Also, you should know that there is no sales tax on geothermal heat pumps in Maryland, and your heat pump won’t increase your property taxes. Good luck with the grant and tax credit!
