Unfortunately, there are currently no geothermal heat pump rebates available in Southern California.
You can, however, take advantage of the renewable energy tax creditthrough 2016 if you owe money on your taxes. The credit is equal to 30 percent of the cost of geothermal heat pumps and both solar and wind energy systems with no upper limit. All ENERGY STAR geothermal heat pumps qualify for the credit.
If you are interested in converting to renewable energy heating, you could also consider a solar water heater, and take advantage of the California solar initiative solar water heating rebate program. The program offers cash rebates of up to $1,875 for solar water heating systems in single-family homes, and is administered by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), Southern California Gas Company (SCGC) and the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) on behalf of San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). Homes must currently heat their water using gas or electricity supplied by one of the participating utilities to be eligible for the rebates. Rebate levels vary depending on whether the solar water heating system replaces electricity or natural gas, and rebates are paid upfront based upon the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation's (SRCC) estimated first year energy savings.
