Yes! The federal government offers a tax credit for energy efficiency measures including energy efficient roofing. The tax credit is equal to 30 percent of the material costs for up to $1,500. In order to qualify, the materials must be ENERGY STAR approved and either metal roofs with "appropriate pigmented coatings" or asphalt roofing with "appropriate cooling granules."

If you’re looking for other ways to keep heat from seeping through you roof and into your living space, consider planting a few shade trees or adding insulation to your attic. SDG&E offers a rebate on attic and wall insulation at $0.15 per square foot of added insulation. Insulation is also eligible for the tax credit mentioned above. To be sure of what measures would be the most effective in your home, have your home audited for it’s energy efficiency.
