Yes! You will still qualify for the federal Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credit if you install your new energy-efficient windows yourself. However, installing the windows yourself may make you ineligible for certain local utility or statewide rebates. You should check with the program administrators to make sure you’ll still qualify.

Other energy efficiency upgrades that are covered under the federal tax credit, like HVAC installations, also cover 30 percent of the cost of labor, but if you do the work yourself, you won’t be allowed to take the labor cost credit.

Finally, unless you have experience installing windows, you may want to have a professional do the work to ensure that they are properly installed and air sealed in order to prevent drafts and other problems that will contribute to an inefficient home.
