I am trying to get an idea of the cost of replacing my vinyl clad aluminum windows (1989) with ENERGY STAR windows. I have 26 windows and most all of them are between 3-4 ft. wide and 5 ft. tall. We do not wish to disturb our siding. Our windows are actually in good shape, but we have had trouble with the bottom sash balance springs breaking on five of the windows. Is it possible to replace the balances without replace the entire window? Is there a good way to estimate the cost of this work?

The average cost to replace windows with ENERGY STAR Vinyl windows with a .30 U-value or less would be $500 to $600.00 each, depending on the size of the window. So 26 windows multiplied by $500 is $13,000. Keep in mind that windows that meet these ENERGY STAR standards will also qualify for the federal tax credit, which will cover up to $1,500 of the cost of energy efficient window installations.

You can replace the windows without disturbing siding if certain conditions are existing, but it's hard to determine that without seeing the job site.

The window balances can be replaced on most windows, and new windows have a lifetime labor and material warranty from the manufacturer.

Two things to look for &mdash the brand of the window and the date stamp (1989) between the glass. The sticker in the top track of the window usually has all the info you need for part ordering.
