If a group of parishioners at a parish in Seattle voluntarily funded a solar installation at the church (the installation was then owned by the utility), would this qualify for the $5k/year incentive?

Let's say 3 people donated $ to the parish (or maybe it's directly to the solar installer?) to install a 5-10kw system. Could each of them receive the incentive? I am trying to understand what it means when it says "each participant in the community solar project can apply to receive this incentive."

Also, is there any mechanism whereby these people would be eligible for the tax credit? (Or is the tax credit simply lost because the church itself is non-profit?)

Complicated question! We had to turn to Mike Nelson at the Northwest Solar Center for the answer.

Basically, the best way for the people donating the money for the solar installation to keep the tax credit themselves is for them to retain ownership of the solar panel installation and lease it to the church.

You can follow up with Mike at the Northwest Solar Center if you have more specific questions.
